Emergencies
  • White Fillings*

Composite resin fillings are tooth-coloured restorations often used to replace amalgam (silver) fillings. These restorations are bonded to the surrounding tooth material making them suitable for both front and back teeth.

    Mouthguards

Mouthguards are an essential item for people playing sport and can save your teeth from damage. Professionally fitted mouthguards are prepared in a Dental Laboratory from impressions made by your dentist.

    Crown and Bridge*

Trauma, decay or root canal treatment may severely weaken a tooth. A crown is often required to save a tooth and to strengthen it. A crown will fit over the existing tooth and replaces the crown ie. the part of the tooth you can see above your gums. Crowns are usually made of either porcelain or porcelain fused to gold and are made to match the colour of your natural teeth. Crowns may also be made of Gold.

Missing teeth can be replaced by using your natural teeth to anchor a bridge with artificial teeth suspended in the gap. When a tooth is lost through trauma or cannot be saved by root canal treatment, a bridge is one of the possible solutions as are permanent implants.

    Root Canal Treatment*

The objective of root canal treatment is to save a tooth that has been severely damaged because of decay, disease or injury. It is preferred to save your own tooth, where this is possible, as it will generally be better than an artificial tooth. Your own tooth is likely to be stronger and better for biting and chewing.

It may be necessary to have several visits to the dentist to have the root canals cleaned and the infected pulp to be removed. After each visit the dentist will place a temporary filling. A root treated tooth is at increased risk of fracture and your dentist will usually recommend the protection of an artificial crown.

    Grinding or Clenching Teeth

Grinding of your teeth can lead to wear and may even cause permanent damage to your teeth. This often occurs at night when you have no conscious control over the grinding. Treatment is aimed at either removing the cause of the grinding or to minimise the damage by making a customised splint to protect the teeth.

    Gum Infection

    Bad Breath

    * For patients with a Teachers Health and/or GU Health Insurance there will be no out of pocket expenses for your fillings, crowns and root canal treatments. These will be fully covered by your health fund.

    Bonding

Bonding is generally a good alternative for treating small blemishes and chips and can be done in one visit to the dentist. The tooth is prepared and resin is moulded to the shape required to repair the blemish. This is then trimmed and polished to a final finish.

    Veneers

Providing a more beautiful, natural looking smile. Veneers are finely sculptured shells which are bonded to the front of the tooth to change their colour or shape, make them look straighter, minimise gaps or lengthen them if they are short or chipped. Dental veneers can help create beautiful, flawless smiles. Veneers are less intrusive than a crown and where the underlying tooth is strong can be an alternative to crowns. Usually made of porcelain, (they can also be made with resin) veneers are ideal for treating chipped, discoloured or misaligned teeth. They may also be suitable for repairing and closing gaps between your teeth.

    Porcelain Filling

  • The Australian Dental Association recommends children have their first dental visit at 12 months of age!

Starting early and having regular dental visits ensures that children do not end up with painful and costly dental care. Children who see their dentist regularly are more comfortable, have less problems and are less likely to be afraid of dental treatments.

Our convenient appointment times make it easy for you to schedule an appointment for your child/children, even if it’s right after school. All you need to do is give us a call at (02) 8978 3871 to have our receptionist reserve an appointment for your child/children.

  • Even if we try our best to avoid them, emergencies do happen.

Here at Dee Why Family Dental we understand this and that is why we always reserve two appointment spots each day for people with dental emergencies.

A dental emergency can range from things like a raging toothache, swelling, a broken or fractured tooth, a lost crown, a knocked out tooth or broken dentures.

If you have a dental emergency please give us a call right away at (02) 8978 3871 so we can get you in as soon as possible.

Depending on the emergency, there are several things you can do to help lessen it’s severity.

    • If you are feeling any kind of pain, painkillers such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol are recommended, but do not exceed the maximum dosage.
    • If you have a lost crown, it should be re-cemented quickly to avoid damage or the possible need for a root canal.
    • Any knocked out teeth should be re-implanted into their sockets immediately. Do not try to handle the tooth root in the event of a knocked out tooth.  You can either place the tooth in cold milk, or on one side of your mouth between your teeth and cheeks.  Whatever you do, do not place the tooth in water.
    • Broken dentures are usually an easy fix, but please do not try to glue them back together yourself as that will often make the repairs difficult.
